Open Access in SpringerNature
SpringerNature-DEAL in general

The SpringerNature-DEAL contract has been in existence since 8 January 2020 with all the eligible institutions participating in the DEAL contract (including the HZI):

From now on HZI authors can publish free of charge in all Springer, Macmillan and Nature Society journals (except Nature and Nature-branded journals). The publication and OA costs are paid from the previous subscription fees. The only exceptions are Nature and Nature branded journals, for which we still have a separate license agreement (reading).   The changeover for the Springer and BioMedCentral Open Access journals will not take place until August 1, 2020, but these publications are covered by our OA publication fund, so nothing will change for our authors for the time being.

Contract period: 2020-2022, option for an additional year. (DEAL contract with Springer Nature was published at: https://doi.org/10.17617/2.3174351)

Important key points including (start) dates:

01.01.2020: Activation of all authorized subscriber facilities for all SpringerNature journals (currently about 1,900 Springer subscription journals), with archive access back to 1997!    Publications by authorised authors can be published from 1.1.2020 onwards in currently about 2000 Springer journals of the former subscription journals Open Access (= Open Choice/hybrid model).

01.08.2020: Publications by authorised authors in currently around 600 Springer Nature Open Access journals = Fully Open Access (including Scientific Reports and Nature Communications) will be covered by the contract from 1.8.2020. A discount of 20% will be granted on the APC list prices of all Springer Open Access and BMC titles (does not apply to Nature Communications and Scientific Reports). All manuscripts accepted for publication (deadline 01.08.2019) with corresponding authors from the participating institutions will be published and activated immediately and free of charge (with CC-BY 4.0, only for a few journals with CC-BY-NC).

 Please choose -if available - CreativeCommons-licence CC-BY  e.g. due to user-friendly usage rights, PlanS-compliance etc., see u.a.:

See SpringerNature-DEAL contract:

Not included in SpringerNature-DEAL: all Nature journals (except for the journals Nature Communications & Scientific Reports contained in the DEAL), magazines (e.g. Scientific American, Spektrum der Wissenschaft), technical journals (e.g. ATZ, MTZ)

*Please note: in DEAL-contracts the so-called hybrid model in Wiley-DEAL and SpringerNature-DEAL are full OpenAccess-articles and those fees are covered thus there are no additional fees for OpenAccess, so please always vote the OpenAccess-option as default there! see also DEAL explained: A-Z and DEAL-FAQ for authors (Will the publisher charge open access publication fees to authors?)

What to consider regarding SpringerNature-OpenAccess?

1) OpenAccess-Publishing with SpringerNature

There are 2 kinds of OpenAccess-Publishing with SpringerNature

a)      OpenChoice (hybrid model) without additional fee (in case of acceptance date from 1st January 2020 onwards) as default in previously subscription-based Journals (currently ca. 2000 Journals see list of all SpringerNature-Journals (colum H/Publishing Model= OpenChoice)

Choose in Author Dashboard:

„Yes: I want to publish my article with open access and my Institution covers the charge” (as default without additional fee)

Please choose -if available (normally after acceptance) - CreativeCommons-licence CC-BY  e.g. due to user-friendly usage rights, PlanS-compliance etc., see u.a.:

2)      Affiliation has to be indicated correctly

The affiliation of the corresponding author receives the article invoice.

For publications, authors should always specify at least the so-called Primary Affiliation. This is the institution where the research has been done. This is important because the article of this institution is also allocated financially.

see SpringerDEAL-agreement, p. 22: “the guiding understanding for “primary affiliation” is the following: the institution at which the bulk of the research for the article was conducted.”
Definitions (p.33):
Affiliate” means a party controlling, controlled by, or under common control with another party, where “control” means the direct or indirect ownership of at least fifty percent (50%) of the stock or other equity interest of a party
