The World Health Organization declared tuberculosis a global health emergency, and despite efforts toward eradication, the situation has intensified. Social and operational factors, including the growing AIDS epidemic and increasing drug resistance, have dramatically compounded the tuberculosis crisis. Tuberculosis and the Tubercle Bacillus, an extension of the 1994 publication Tuberculosis, is a state-of-the-art review of the corpus of knowledge available to researchers in the field.

Divided into three comprehensive sections, this new volume begins with an examination of the current issues related to tuberculosis, including clinical and epidemiological features of the disease-causing strains. Topics explored in the second section include genetics, genomics, cell structure, and metabolism of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Tuberculosis and the Tubercle Bacillus concludes with a detailed discussion of the host-bacillus relationship and presents information on animal models and their roles in prevention of tuberculosis.
