Inhalt

In the mid-1980s, force spectroscopy was developed and used for the first time to image objects at ultrahigh resolution, extending our perception of biological samples into the nano realm of single molecules and their dynamics in chemical reactions and into the world of single atoms for hard surfaces, such as metal surfaces, thereby enabling a new understanding of nature. It is due to these developments in nanoscience and nanotechnologies that in the past 20 years there has been a renewed understanding of the living cells at the molecular level. This book discusses new approaches and applications that have unraveled a new understanding of the cell, with profound impact on biology, medicine, and healthcare.

In the past 20 years, use of cutting-edge nanotechnologies and novel imaging modalities, new discoveries to understand the cell, and new developments to treat diseases has given birth to the new field of nano cell biology and medicine. Since no book has been published on the subject until now, this book acquaints the readers with some of the major developments in the field.

As the ultimate goal in biology is to unravel the structure and dynamics of a living cell at the atomic level, so is the major challenge in medicine to treat diseases noninvasively. Both these objectives, however, are inseparable because an understanding of cellular structure and function is integral to the success of drug design, development, and therapy. This book provides a comprehensive understanding of the discovery of a new cellular structure the "porosome," which is the universal secretory machinery in cells; the protein assembly, biomineralization, and biomolecular interactions; the molecular evolution of protein structure; the use of magnetic nanoparticles for transformative application in medicine and therapy, and the new and novel imaging approach of electrical impedance spectroscopy in biology.
